THE MUSICAL TATTER

Where do you tat?

I have a question. Do you all tat in public places?

I tat when I'm at the doctor's office, when I am waiting for my order in a restaurant and also tat when I am in the car (not when I'm driving, though. I haven't mastered that yet!). I don't make a big show about it, just quietly tat and most of the time, people want to know what I am doing. Recently, I had an older man in a doctor's office (who bragged that he was a Master Plumber) make a comment about how he couldn't stand to do something that is so repetitive and boring. I told him that I look at the big picture when it is finished and enjoy the process of completing it. I guess he had a hard problem understanding that. (Besides, I'll bet as a plumber, he does many repetitive things!) I also told him that (believe it or not) I do make money with my tatting. He couldn't quite understand that, either. Oh well, I'm glad I don't get comments like his very often. Most people have never heard of tatting and are amazed at the delicate lacey look. I love to create pretty things and enjoy it when someone else enjoys it, too.

I tat in the train on my way to work whenever I get a seat. Some people do stare at how I tat while my 'neighbours' sometimes get too close trying to take a good look. :)

Your little motifs are very pretty.

If I rode on a train, I'd be tatting on the train, too. I guess they can look all they want, right? They will never figure it out by just looking. :) Linda

Most of the time I tat on my couch parked in front of the TV, LOL!
I do TIP, too (tat in public).
I've tatted in Dr's offices, at the park, on the bus, at the bus stop (though I rarely ride the bus). I once tatted at church (naughty, huh?).

I would love to be able to tatt at church. Maybe if I sat in the back, I could get away with it. One time, I even walked through Wal-Mart and tatted--my daughter was shopping and I was bored. So I pulled it out of my purse and started up. I think I'm addicted to it! Linda

Hi Linda, I'm addicted to tatting, too. There is no doubt about it!

Thanks for your nice comment on my blog post about the blossoming heart. To answer your questions:
(1) Do you know of any left-handed shuttle tatters?
Yes, as a matter of fact I have taught two left-handed people to tat! One person mirrored everything I did with her left hand and needed me to sit directly across from her. The other one felt it was best to do it the way I did it because the left hand has the MOST IMPORTANT JOB; the TENSION. The right hand just moves the shuttle around. That's why most people have such trouble with getting the threads to flip because it all about very subtle movements made by the left hand and most people are right handed. You actually have an advantage over right handed shuttle tatters for that reason! :)

(2) Also, do you know if there are any needle tatters on here?
Do you mean in blog-land? I believe that Totus Mel is a needle tatter. (I don't have her link readily available) You could also pose the question at www.intatters.com and get a bunch of people answering you.

I appreciate our prompt reply and all your help. I just couldn't get the shuttle tatting when my sister showed me. It took me 6 months to teach myself needle tatting, so I was a pretty slow learner. But I was determined to learn, and I'm so glad I did. Even though I never learned to shuttle tat, I have taught over 400 people how to needle tat through the continuing education program at our local university. I can teach something that I know well, since I also teach voice and piano. So, even though they don't shuttle tat, at least they are enjoying the art of tatting with a needle. I really enjoy your posts and thank you for responding to my posts. Linda

Linda, you may not remember, but you helped me with tatting when you taught classes at the Folkheart store. I came in several times for tatting help. I'm so glad I learned to tat. I love it and I'm a needle tatter too. I just couldn't get the hang of shuttle tatting. I sure do miss that store.

Hi, Sharon - Yes, I remember you. I know, I wish that store had lasted, but it's just too hard to stay in business these days. And Northgate is not doing that well right now, anyway. Did you ever come down to my store at the Choo Choo. It was Little Lace Lady. I sold it two years ago to one of my employees. She is much younger than I am and has lots more energy. Thanks for responding to my blog. Linda
